Children Photography

Photographing children is lovely. They are so natural and spontaneous in front of the camera, which makes the photographer’s work much easier than it is when capturing portraits of adults.

How was the above image created:

  • Natural day light- indoors
  • Canon EOS 550D
  • F-stop: f/5.6
  • Exposure time: 1/500s
  • ISO-3200
  • Focal length: 55mm

Image strengths: The baby in the image above is wonderful, the composition really makes this photograph work. The combination of the dark brown eyes of the baby and the blue background are also a perfect match. Finally, the image communicates an action (the baby is thoughtful), which adds a story to the image therefore making it more engaging and interesting to the viewer.

Image weaknesses: There are a few technical settings that could have been modified before shooting so the image could have even better. For example, I could have had a stronger light in the room, which would have permitted me to lower the ISO and have a more crystal image. Because of the low light at the time of shooting there is quite a bit of noise in this photo. Definitely something to watch out for next time.

The image of the little girl (Arianna) drinking a smoothie was taken in the following conditions:

  • Day light-outdoors
  • Canon EOS 550D
  • F-stop: f/5
  • Exposure time: 1/125sec
  • ISO: 100
  • Focal Length: 45mm

Strengths: The centred composition works well here as it’s more about the subject than the story in this photograph. Arinna is at the centre of attention here and everything else is just background, therefore there was no need to include any additional space of distracting elements in the composition. The colours also work in perfect harmony here.

looks like i’m promoting innocent drinks, but it’s pure coincidence that she was drinking that smoothie, I’m not actually being commissioned to take this photo for the company.

Weaknesses: personally, I think this photo is pretty good but happy to hear your thoughts in the comments.

The little Arianna again, wonderful composition and colour combination. Wonder if it looks a bit sad?

The above is probably my favourite image, as it captures the spirit of the children and the playful atmosphere:

  • Day light-indoors
  • Canon EOS 550D
  • F-stop: f/3.5
  • Exposure time: 1/320sec
  • ISO: 500
  • Focal Length: 18mm

Strengths: As I mentioned above, lovely story-telling elements in this image. The colours and the brightness are great.

Weaknesses: Could have worked harder on the composition as the pillow behind is unbalancing it a little. Overall I’m pleased with this shoot.

Happy to read your comments and suggestions.
